 Editor's Note

Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, Shenzhen has developed rapidly, creating a great miracle that makes the world look at it with new eyes. Shenzhen today is the epitome and witness of the significant historical change and rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Through the sharing of compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan areas of China and the sharing of international friends, this column tells about their experiences and feelings of studying, working, living and starting a business in Shenzhen. It shows the Shenzhen temperament of daring to venture, openness and inclusiveness, being pragmatic and law-abiding, pursuing excellence, and Shenzhen’s charm of being suitable for living, business and tourism. Under the historic opportunity of building the first pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics, Shenzhen is starting a new journey with the momentum of "reform does not stop, opening up does not stop", and as a tribute to the centenary of the CPC.

Mary Ann O』Donnell:be open and inclusive, make brilliant achievements

 ——American anthropologist

"Mobility" is what the American anthropologist Mary Ann O』Donnell sees in Shenzhen. Since ancient times, Shenzhen has been a land of migration and mobility. The earliest immigration group to Shenzhen was the Hakka people in the Southern Song Dynasty. Later, the Western Churches in modern times brought Western civilization to the city. After the reform and opening up, the slogan "If You Come, You’re a Shenzhener" entered deeply into people's hearts. Shenzhen, the city of miracles, is synonymous with mobility.

In September 1995, in order to complete her doctoral dissertation, Mary Ann O』Donnell, who studied sociology and anthropology, came to China from Houston, USA. After completing her dissertation, she chose to stay in Shenzhen to continue her observations and research. She said: "At that time, American scholars interested in China either went to Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou. Few of them went to other cities, and few knew about Shenzhen. " Mary Ann O』Donnell chose to stay in Shenzhen because she believed that, compared with Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, the establishment of Shenzhen Special Economic Zone had brought rapid changes to this city, and the open atmosphere had attracted many dream chasers, which was exactly the point of interest for her to conduct her research.

As a sociologist, over the past 25 years, Mary Ann O』Donnell has paid close attention to and studied Shenzhen in various fields, including architecture, urban planning, social and cultural changes, etc. She once worked as an English teacher and executive principal in an international school, but she finally chose to return to the study of urban development. In 2012, after 17 years of working and living in China, Mary Ann O』Donnell decided to publish a book in the form of a survey report to introduce Shenzhen to Western society. At that time, the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone had been under construction for more than 30 years, but the outside world still had a one-sided understanding of Shenzhen. For example, the outside world only regarded Shenzhen as a "paradise for earning money", but ignored that Shenzhen's brilliance comes from the open and inclusive social atmosphere, which provides opportunities for dream chasers from all over the world to achieve success.

In 2017, Learning from Shenzhen: China’s Post-Mao Experiment from Special Zone to Model City, a book jointly completed by Mary Ann O』Donnell and other Chinese and foreign scholars, was published by the University of Chicago Press in the United States. In August 2020, it was translated into Chinese. After its publication, the book has gained recognition in Western academic circles and has become a textbook for Chinese anthropology and sociology research in some American universities.

Shenzhen is a city of immigrants. Under the background of migration and mobility, how can people identify with this city? How to find a sense of home here? Mary Ann O』Donnell, who has settled in Shenzhen, has been thinking about this topic all the time.

"I came to Shenzhen for research; I stayed here for love. " Mary Ann O』Donnell made no secret that she remained in Shenzhen because of her husband, playwright Yang Qian. She compared Yang Qian to a tree transplanted from Tianjin to Shenzhen, and herself a tree transplanted from the United States to Shenzhen.

In recent years, the research of "Shenzhen fever" has gradually focused on social and cultural issues. Most foreign urban researchers and anthropologists who come to Shenzhen will visit Mary Ann O'Donnell as soon as they arrive. "Only coming to Shenzhen can they really understand this city and know what's happening in China", Mary Ann O'Donnell said, "Maybe I am the only one they can find who understands the history of Shenzhen. "

Although Mary Ann O』Donnell has lived in Shenzhen for 25 years, she often goes to other places for investigation, tourism, and visiting friends. However, only Shenzhen can give her a sense of belonging. In her opinion, this sense of belonging comes from her roots in the city. "If you come to Shenzhen and you don't change yourself, you can't stay. "
